HOW IT WORKS: When the battery generates electricity, the electric current that makes the motor run is produced by a flow of tiny particles called electrons. Inside the activated carbon, the oxygen from the air and the water from the cloth combine with the electrons that flow through the wire from the motor. This creates particles known as hydroxide ions in the water. On the magnesium sheet, the hydroxide ions in the water combine with the magnesium to create magnesium oxide and some electrons that flow through the copper sheet, down through the wire to the motor.
